The Reality

If you've hired a tutor before, this list will sound familiar.

These are the situations we help Cambridge customers solve every week.

  • Your kid has been working with a tutor for 4 months and the grades haven't moved
  • Your high schooler scored a 1180 on the diagnostic SAT and the target school's median is 1450 — and the test is in 9 weeks
  • Your daughter is brilliant in English and locked up in math and you can't tell whether it's the math or the teaching style
  • Your son has an IEP and most tutors don't actually know how to work with that — they default to repeating the same explanation slower
  • Three tutoring services quoted $45 to $185 per session and you can't tell what the difference actually is

Our Services

What we offer.

K-12 Subject Tutoring

Service · 01

K-12 Subject Tutoring

Math (algebra through AP calculus), science (chemistry, physics, AP biology), English and writing, history, foreign languages, and elementary core subjects. Same-tutor-every-session consistency, weekly cadence typical, with progress reports for parents every 4 weeks. Most students see meaningful improvement inside 6 sessions.

SAT & ACT Test Prep

Service · 02

SAT & ACT Test Prep

Targeted SAT and ACT prep — diagnostic test, individualized study plan, weekly working sessions, and full-length proctored practice tests at intervals. Average score gain on our caseload: SAT +180, ACT +5. Standard package is 20–30 hours over 12–16 weeks; intensive packages compress that timeline for late-start clients.

College Application & Essay Coaching

Service · 03

College Application & Essay Coaching

End-to-end college application support — list-building, Common App essay coaching, supplemental essays, activity-list framing, and interview prep. Coaches are recent Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale, and Princeton grads who've been through admissions and can speak to it. Junior-year start ideal; senior-year fall still possible with focused timeline.

Specialized Learning Support (IEP/504)

Service · 04

Specialized Learning Support (IEP/504)

Tutors trained in working with IEP and 504-plan students — ADHD, dyslexia, autism spectrum, executive-function, and processing-speed accommodations. We coordinate with your child's school team and outside therapist where helpful. Tutor matching specifically prioritizes pedagogical fit over subject-only fit.

The Difference

Why Cambridge and Greater Boston families pick Beacon.

01

Harvard + MIT Tutor Roster

Our tutors are current Harvard, MIT, Tufts, and BU graduate students and select recent grads — vetted on subject mastery, teaching ability, and student rapport. We turn down 90% of applicants. Subject mastery alone isn't enough; teaching is its own skill.

02

Careful Tutor-Student Matching

We don't auto-assign. Every match starts with a 30-minute parent-and-student match call to understand the student's learning style, social fit, current frustrations, and goals. We propose 1–2 tutors who fit, and you choose. About 8% of our matches get re-matched in the first 4 sessions; we make that change free.

03

Result-Driven, Tracked

Progress reports every 4 weeks for K-12 subject work. Diagnostic-to-mock-test score tracking on test prep. Application milestones tracked monthly on college coaching. We don't just bill hours — we track whether the work is actually moving the needle.

04

Online or In-Person

About 60% of our caseload is online (full Zoom + collaborative-whiteboard setup), 40% in-person at Cambridge or your home. Online has caught up to in-person on quality for most subjects; we recommend the format that fits your kid, not what's easier for us.

Common Questions

You probably want to know.

How much does it cost?+

K-12 subject tutoring: $95–$135/hr depending on level and subject. SAT/ACT test prep package: $2,400–$5,800 for full 20–30 hour program. College application coaching: $4,800–$8,800 for full junior-and-senior-year package. IEP/504 specialty support: $115–$155/hr. Pay-as-you-go or package billing both available.

How fast can we start?+

Match call typically scheduled inside 5 business days. Tutor matched and first session inside 7–10 days for K-12, 5–7 days for test-prep urgency. Late-start test prep (12 weeks or less out) prioritized in scheduling.

Online or in-person — which is better?+

Both work for most students. Online is more flexible (no commute, easy reschedule), and the Zoom + collaborative-whiteboard setup has caught up to in-person on quality. In-person is better for younger kids (K–5) where attention is harder over screen, and for kids with executive-function challenges that benefit from physical presence. We recommend at the match call.

What's the typical score gain on test prep?+

SAT: average +180 points across our caseload. ACT: average +5 points. Larger gains on lower starting scores (a 1100→1320 is a bigger absolute jump than 1450→1500). We track diagnostic-to-mock-test progress monthly so you can see whether the work is moving the score.

Do you handle IEP/504 students?+

Yes — about 25% of our caseload. We have tutors specifically trained in ADHD, dyslexia, executive-function, and processing-speed accommodations. We coordinate with your school team and outside therapist when helpful. Match call prioritizes pedagogical fit over pure subject mastery.

Schedule the match call. The right tutor changes everything.

Free 30-minute match call with a Beacon director — we listen, ask the right questions, and propose 1–2 tutors who fit. You choose. We don't auto-assign. Most students start within 7–10 days.
