ChatGPT SEO: How to Optimize for AI Search

When customers ask ChatGPT who to hire, it names businesses. Here’s how to be one of them.

ChatGPT SEOis the work of getting your business named when someone asks ChatGPT — or Google’s AI answers — who to hire. There’s no ranking to buy and no page two: the AI recommends the businesses it can find, verify, and trust from public information. Optimizing for AI search means making your business easy to find, verify, and trust. Seven steps, below.

45% of buyers now ask ChatGPT for a recommendation — millions of searches a day. Almost no one’s optimized for it. Wide open. Claim it.

Our data · July 2026

Most businesses are invisible to AI. We measured it.

We benchmarked more than 12,900 local businesses across eight industries by asking ChatGPT for recommendations the way real customers do. Of the businesses we checked: nationally, only about a third of roofers, plumbers, HVAC companies, and general contractors were ever named. Statewide in Florida, just 7.7% of 3,568 dentists and 4% of 2,209 chiropractorsgot named at all. The rest don’t exist to a customer asking AI who to hire — which is exactly why starting now is an advantage.

How AI decides which businesses to recommend

When someone asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI “who’s the best [trade]near me?”, the AI doesn’t check a secret list. It assembles an answer from what it can read: your website, your reviews, directories, and pages that mention you. It names businesses it can identify (clear name, services, service area), verify (consistent details across independent sources), and quote(content that actually answers the customer’s question).

Every step below strengthens one of those three. That’s the whole strategy — no tricks, because there’s nothing to trick. You’re making your business legible to a machine that’s trying to give a good answer.

How to optimize for AI search: 7 steps

1

Find out where you stand today

Before optimizing anything, get the baseline: when a customer asks ChatGPT for a recommendation in your industry and area, does it name you, a competitor, or nobody? Run the actual question and see. Our free AI Visibility Checker does exactly this — it asks the questions your customers ask and tells you whether you're named, plus what to fix first.

2

Make your website machine-readable with structured data

Schema markup is a standard format that hands AI your facts — business name, services, area served, prices, FAQs — in a form it can trust and quote. Most small-business sites have none, which forces the AI to guess. The competitor with clean structured data doesn't get guessed about; they get named.

3

State plainly who you are, what you do, and where

AI engines can't recommend a business they can't clearly identify. Your site should say, in actual sentences a machine can lift, “[Business] is a [trade] serving [areas], offering [services].” Vague brochure copy — “excellence in service since 1998” — gives AI nothing to work with.

4

Answer real customer questions, one per section

AI answers are assembled from pages that directly answer questions: “how much does X cost?”, “how long does Y take?”, “what's the difference between A and B?” Write the questions your customers actually ask as headings, and answer each one completely in the first sentence or two underneath. That structure is exactly what AI extracts and cites.

5

Get consistent across reviews and directories

ChatGPT and Google's AI lean on third-party sources — review sites, directories, local listings — to corroborate who's real and who's good. If your name, phone, and address differ from listing to listing, or your review presence is thin, the AI stays unsure and leaves you out. Same details everywhere, and a steady stream of recent reviews.

6

Earn mentions on pages AI already reads

AI engines trust businesses that other credible pages talk about — industry directories, local news, trade associations, “best of” lists. A handful of genuine mentions beats a hundred junk links. This is the slowest lever, and the one that separates you long-term, because it can't be faked cheaply.

7

Re-measure every month

AI answers shift as models update and competitors publish. Optimizing for AI search isn't a one-time project — it's a loop: measure whether you're named, fix the biggest gap, re-measure. The businesses winning this early are simply the ones running the loop while everyone else hasn't started.

Step 1 takes a minute and it’s free: the AI Visibility Checker tells you whether ChatGPT names your business today. Steps 2–5 overlap heavily with ranking higher on Google Maps— the same fundamentals feed both.

What about Google’s AI Overviews?

Google now answers many searches with an AI-written summary at the top of the page — before any regular results. Those summaries cite sources, and the sources they pick follow the same logic as ChatGPT: pages that answer the question directly, clearly, and credibly.

Practical translation: structure your pages so each real customer question is a heading with a complete, plain answer right under it, and mark up your FAQs with structured data. You’re not writing for a robot — you’re writing the clearest answer on the internet to a question your customer actually asked. The AI cites that, and the customer who reads it calls you.

If you’d rather have the whole loop handled — measure, fix, re-measure, every week — that’s our AI Search Optimization service, and it starts with the same Google-and-ChatGPT foundation everything on this page describes.

ChatGPT SEO & AI Search — FAQ

What is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting your business named when someone asks ChatGPT — or Google's AI answers — who to hire. Instead of competing for a position in a list of blue links, you're competing to be one of the handful of businesses the AI mentions by name in its answer. It's also called AI search optimization; the practical work is making your business easy for AI to find, verify, and quote: clear website content, structured data, consistent details across the web, and real reviews.

How do I optimize for AI search?

Seven steps, in order: measure whether AI names you today, add structured data (schema markup) so machines can read your facts, state plainly who you are and what you do and where, publish content that directly answers the questions customers ask, keep your details consistent across reviews and directories, earn genuine mentions on pages AI reads, and re-measure monthly. None of it is exotic — it's making your business legible to machines that are deciding who to recommend.

Is ChatGPT SEO different from regular SEO?

It overlaps more than it differs. Traditional SEO earns you a ranking in a list of links; ChatGPT SEO earns you a mention inside a written answer. The foundations are shared — clear content, trust signals, technical health — which means work done right moves both. The differences: AI leans harder on structured data and direct-answer content, it cross-checks you against third-party sources more aggressively, and there's no page two — you're either named in the answer or you don't exist for that customer.

How do I appear in Google's AI Overviews?

Google's AI Overviews — the AI-written answer at the top of many searches — cite sources the same way ChatGPT does: they favor pages that answer the question directly and clearly. To be cited, structure pages so each real customer question is a heading with a complete, plain answer in the first sentence or two below it, add FAQ structured data, and build the same trust signals that rank you in regular results. There's no separate trick; AI Overviews reward the clearest credible answer.

Can I pay ChatGPT or Google to recommend my business?

No. There's no ad product that buys your way into ChatGPT's recommendations or Google's AI-written answers — the AI names businesses it can find, verify, and trust from public information. That's exactly why this is worth doing: the recommendations can't be bought, so they go to whoever does the groundwork first. In most local markets right now, almost nobody has.

How many businesses does ChatGPT actually recommend?

Fewer than most people expect. In July 2026 we benchmarked more than 12,900 local businesses — dentists, chiropractors, roofers, plumbers, HVAC companies, general contractors, med spas, and security companies — by asking ChatGPT for recommendations the way real customers do. Nationally, only about a third of the contractors we checked were ever named. In our Florida statewide checks it was starker: 7.7% of 3,568 dentists and 4% of 2,209 chiropractors. Most businesses are simply invisible to AI today.

How long does ChatGPT SEO take to work?

On-site fixes — structured data, clear identity, question-answering content — can start showing up in AI answers within weeks, because AI systems check sources continuously. Building the review base and third-party mentions that make AI confident enough to recommend you over established competitors takes months. Honest version: this is a compounding asset, not a this-week tactic — and the head start matters, because so few businesses have begun.

Do I still need regular Google SEO if I do ChatGPT SEO?

Yes — they're two doors to the same customer, and the work overlaps heavily. Millions still search Google every day, and 45% of buyers now also ask ChatGPT for recommendations. A business that's visible in Google results, the map pack, and AI answers gets found three ways; fixing your site, reviews, and consistency moves all three at once. Start with whichever is furthest behind — a free audit will tell you which that is.
