Hardscaping is the hard part of a yard: patios, walkways, steps, driveways and retaining walls built from pavers, natural stone or segmental block. The finished surface is what a customer buys. What decides whether it is still flat in three years is the compacted stone underneath it that nobody ever sees.

What does a hardscaping week actually look like?
A patio is not a day. A residential job usually runs most of a week and the order rarely changes: mark utilities and lay out the shape, strip sod and excavate to depth, roll geotextile over soft subgrade, bring in crushed base stone, compact it in thin lifts, screed a bedding layer, lay the field, cut the perimeter, set edge restraint and sweep in joint sand.
Between those steps sit the things that make the week long. Material has to get from the street to the back yard, which on a fenced lot means a wheelbarrow or a machine narrow enough for the gate. Excavated soil has to leave. Rain fills an open excavation and turns a prepared base into mud you now have to remove. And the customer is home, watching a hole in their yard before anything resembles a patio.
It is heavy work in a way people underestimate. Pavers arrive on pallets, wall block is heavier still, and a day of laying is spent bent over. Crews wear out faster than the tools do, which is why nearly every experienced installer eventually buys a machine to carry things.
Why does the base matter more than the pavers?
Because most failures blamed on the stone are base failures. A patio that dips, a walkway that heaves, a wall that leans out: those come from shallow excavation, base spread too thick to compact through, or water with nowhere to go.
The rules are boring and they do not bend. Excavate deeper than the paver plus the bedding layer, and deeper again in clay or under a driveway that carries a vehicle. Put fabric between soft subgrade and base so the two never mix. Use an angular crushed aggregate with fines that lock together, never round pea gravel. Compact in lifts thin enough for the machine to reach through. Then slope the finished surface away from the house.

How do you read a site before you quote?
Walk it before you price it, because the yard decides the job. Where does water go now, and where will it go once a hard surface sits where grass used to be? Is there enough fall to move water away from the house, or does the design need a drain? Is the soil sand that drains or clay that moves in a freeze?
Then look at access. Gate width, the slope down to the back yard, a septic field you cannot drive over and low branches all change how material moves and what it costs you in labor. Ask about buried utilities and call the free national dig line before a shovel goes in, because striking a gas or fiber line is the fastest way to end a young company. Note the height of doors and thresholds, since a finished patio has to land below the door and still shed water.
What equipment does the first job need?

- Hand tools that take a beating: shovels, rakes, a level, string line, mallet and chisels

- The protection people skip: hearing and eye protection, knee pads, a mask at the saw
Rent before you buy. A machine sitting in the yard between jobs is a payment; a rented one is a line on that job. Own the compactor and the saw early, then rent the excavator.
When does a wall need an engineer, and what about permits?
Retaining walls are the part of this trade with real consequences. A low garden wall is landscaping. Once a wall passes a height threshold, or holds back a slope, a driveway or anything with a load behind it, most places require a building permit and a design stamped by a licensed engineer. The wall also needs what the homeowner never sees: drainage stone behind the block, a perforated pipe with somewhere to discharge, and geogrid tying the wall back into the soil.
That threshold, the permit process, and whether hardscape work needs a license at all, vary by state and often by city on top of that. Do not take another installer's word for it. Check your state's official requirements, then call the local building department for the wall height that triggers a permit where you work.
